Sharknado Bites into Aussie Screens

So as to not blindly lead anyone into thinking they’ll be in for an edge-of-your-seat masterpiece film, Sharknado will never win any awards (well, any of the good kind).  The premise of the film should clear that up for everyone:

“When a freak hurricane swamps Los Angeles, thousands of sharks terrorize the waterlogged populace. And when the high-speed winds form tornadoes in the desert, nature’s deadliest killer rules water, land, and air”

Yep, a movie about a shark filled tornado.

So let’s talk Sharknado.

You’ve got 90210 star-cum-Chippendale Ian Ziering in the lead.  He’s supported by Tara Reid (nuff’ said) and then there’s former Baywatch actor Jaason Simmons playing Australian character Bazz Hogan.

There’s some overtly dodgy special effects and while the acting is not gag-worthy-bad, it’s clear in some scenes, most of the actors involved may have approached this with a tongue-in-cheek method.

That said, this made-for-tv movie has clearly eared it’s cult status even before it aired in the USA.  The social media buzz behind this little film was nothing less than impressive and when you have a movie concept as ridiculous as this, it was open season on Twitter, which saw users send the movies title into one of the top trending topics upon it’s premiere – a feat never achieved by a made-for-tv movie.

Sharknado is premiering tonight on Foxtel’s Universal channel.  Perfect.  Friday night with a movie that’s made for a drinking game.  Apparently, every time Tara Reid is shown on screen simply for her bosoms, you take a hearty gulp.  Another one to take note of is having a drink every time a shark is killed by something other than a gun (spears, chainsaws and bare hands all count towards a drink)

The best bit about the whole thing?  Shaknado has already been pegged for a sequel.

Sharknado premieres tonight on Foxtel.  Universal channel.  8:30pm.
