What do perms, Star Wars action figures, Jane Fonda work out videos and Reo Speedwagon cassette tapes all have in common? They are all cemented in 1980’s history and can be found in the new half hour comedy called The Goldbergs.
so I’ll just get down to the nitty gritty of the show. The Goldbergs follows Bev and Murray Goldberg (the stupidly funny Wendi McLendon-Covey and Jeff Garlin) and their three kids Erica, Barry and Adam, and just like me, it’s set in the amazingly colorful and wild 1980’s and is seen through the narrative of the youngest son Adam (Sean Giambrone) who captures day to day events on his families clunky old-school (but very cool back then) video camera.
Think The Wonder Years but replace Winnie Cooper with a video camera and throw in pixelated expletives.
It could be passed on as another formulated family sitcom (dysfunctional family that deep down all love each other), but, The Goldbergs, once everyone has been identified, evolves into a very tight and witty comedy that offers up some wonderfully funny lines and interactions between characters plus the pop-culture and fashion references of times gone by are spot on and will offer up some great memories for those who lived and grew up during the era.
The Goldbergs will be sitting on my ‘keep watching’ pile and when it airs here, should sit on yours too!
