Melrose Place is Getting the Unauthorized Lifetime Movie Treatment

Laura Leighton (Sydney Andrews) on set with controversial guest star Traci Lords
Laura Leighton (Sydney Andrews) on set with controversial guest star Traci Lords

First it was Saved by the Bell, then Beverly Hills 90210 and now, Lifetime have added another 90’s soap to it’s “Unauthorized behind the scenes” movies in the form of the all bitching, all back stabbing, all bed hopping and all blackmailing Melrose Place.

Originally created as an ‘authentic’ and ‘grounded’ look at 20-somethings in Los Angeles, Melrose Place quickly amped up the heat and star power and become one of the most watched prime time soaps on the 1990’s, created stars out of some of it’s (then) lesser known cast, created a spin-off (Models Inc), produced a re-boot (CW’s Melrose Place lasted one season in 2010) and included guest stars from Loni Anderson to Linda Grey to Chad Lowe and Kathy Ireland.

According to US Weekly, shortly after announcing the 90210 movie, Lifetime quickly jumped on board with The Unauthorized Melrose Place Story which will draw from true stories and anecdotes from interviews with the original cast and crew, The Unauthorized Melrose Place Story will highlight the remarkable behind-the-scenes moments that shaped the series — from early casting drama and Heather Locklear arriving to ‘save’ Melrose Place to the actors begging its writers for even wilder story lines to make them fan favorites.

Did Josie Bissett (Jane Mancini) ask for Jane to get a backbone?

Or did Laura Leighton and Grant Show’s (Jake Hansen) real-life romance influence writers to hook up Jake and Sydney?

While most of the drama took place within the walls of 4616 Melrose Place (Sydney and Jane’s wedding dress cat fight – Kimberly blowing up the apartment building, Amanda having cancer, Kimberly stealing Jo’s baby…..) the show and it’s cast were often featured in and on the cover of tabloid magazines.  Andrew Shue (Billy Campbell) and Courteney Thorne-Smith (Alison Parker) dated, so did Laura Leighton and Grant Show (Leighton eventually married another former cast member Doug Savant – who played gay social worker Matt Fielding).  There was also the rocky marriage of permanent ‘special guest star’ Heather Locklear and her then-husband rocker Tommy Lee that dominated the headlines, porn star Traci Lords guest appearance and the mysterious case of Bold and The Beautiful star Hunter Tylo’s shock axing for falling pregnant before even filming one scene as Taylor McBride – a role that eventually went to Lisa Rinna (Tylo took Spelling TV to court and won).

The Unauthorized Melrose Place Story will focus on the original series run from 1992 to 1999 where cast members included Amy Locane (Sandy Harling), Daphne Zuniga (Jo Reynolds), Thomas Calabro (Michael Mancini), Patrick Muldoon (Richard Hart), Marcia Cross (Kimberly Shaw) and Kelly Rutherford (Megan Lewis) among many many other names.

No word on casting or just what exactly will be featured in this ‘tell-all’ or an air date.

Will you be tuning in?  What do you hope to see covered?

That X-Files Re-Boot Is Almost Happening!

Drink up! The X-Files is nearing a confirmed return!
Drink up! The X-Files is nearing a confirmed return!

That X-Files reboot news that popped up back in early Jan is reportedly one step closer to actually happening with news coming out that FOX are apparently close to green lighting the revival.

It’s being noted that the network has ordered a ‘short stack’ order for the planned re-boot which could see less than 10 episodes made of the popular sci-fi series that made David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson household names.

Both Anderson and Duchovny have had successful post X-files careers and it’s believed that the hectic work schedule of both stars is part of the reasoning behind the short-stack order (Duchovny’s ‘Aquarius’ is due to premiere soon while Anderson is flitting between Hannibal’s third season and The Fall’s third season).

Along with Gillian and David, creator/writer Chris Carter is back on board and an offer to Mitch Pileggi (Director Skinner) has been made.

Any final say on the re-boot is most likely to come in May when FOX have their planned upfront presentation in New York.

Update: March 24th 2015

FOX has confirmed that Mulder and Scully will officially be returning to our screens searching for little green men!

The six episode series is slated to begin production in June/July with creator Chris Carter describing the shows return as “a 13-year commercial break.  The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

No official run date has been set.

Review: Empire ‘Pilot’

empire_article_story_large

Mixing the age old tale of King Lear, the mid 80’s soapie Dynasty and the modern world of r&b/hip hop music and drug money, Empire (Channel 10, Sunday 9pm) offers up a pilot episode that enters the ‘too good to be true’ category of first run shows because you know what…..it’s good!

I will admit, I was somewhat hesitant going into Empire as my scorecard of being entertained by shows with a musical back-tone (Smash/Glee) currently sits at a big Z E R O, but, Empire has notched up my first tick on my card.

This first episode, our first foray into the world of Lucious Lyon (Oscar nominee Terrance Howard) and his world engulfed in Empire Records, is glitzy, shiny, tough, fast-paced and it’s packed full with a lot of dialogue and back story that, if in the hands of anyone else besides Lee Daniels (The Butler) could have gone horribly wrong.

The setup has Lucious Lyon is at the top of his game.  His Empire Records…empire…has provided him with power (he’s on first name basis with Obama), money, and a lavish lifestyle we imagine someone like P.Diddy to be living in.  He’s looking to take Empire Records to the next level but he’s also holding onto a secret – he’s just been diagnosed with ALS – for which there is no cure, and sets out to find the rightful heir to his kingdom.

The problem here is that in Lucious’s eyes, none of his three children are the perfect fit to take the job.  Andre (Trai Byers), the eldest, is the well educated, business minded one but has zero musical talent – Lyon believes the next in line should be a musician – which brings us to Jamal (Jussie Smollett) who is filled to the brim with musical talent – but he’s gay, a topic that Lucious has never been able to accept (there’s a powerful flashback scene in which Lucious, so enraged by Jamal’s effeminate nature, literally throws him into the garbage can) so that leaves youngest Hakeem (Bryshere Gray) but he’s brash, uncontrollable and completely obliterated by the dollar bills readily available to him (remember Chris Lilley’s S’Mouse creation? – #NailedIt).

This struggle for Lucious to find an heir is put into turmoil by the untimely release of his ex wife Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) who has spent the last 17 years in prison for a crime that provided the initial seed money to create Empire Records, and she’s looking for her share of the dosh.

As I said, there’s a lot stuffed into the first episode, but what helps keep things on track is it’s leads in Howard and Henson.  Howard’s approach to Lyon – you want to feel for him…his life’s work building this musical kingdom is about to come crashing down, but his approach to his children (he treats, respects and raises each one completely differently) and ex Cookie just doesn’t sit right, but he’s sick and dying…it’s a constant struggle between the love/hate and love to hate you’ll have for him.  Henson on the other hand, complete standout.

With Cookie Lyon, there’s no bars held here.  She works the weave, the furs, the fake nails, the leopard print and her biting words “I want to show you a faggot can really run this company“.  Seriously, said by anyone else, this would have been an ultimate disaster for any show, but Henson, as Cookie Lyon, manages to walk away from this remark with viewers clapping their hands.  There is truly no one like Cookie on television and hands down, Hanson is probably the best thing on Empire.

I’ve managed to glimpse at the first 5 episodes of Empire and the show holds it’s own after it’s impressive first hit and i’m excited to see more.  Lee Daniels set out to create his “black Dynasty” and that he sure has.  Murder, lies, back-stabbing, secrets, illness, sex….it’s all there and it’s highly seducing.  Even the music (which obviously plays a big part in Empire) could have felt a little bit too Glee, but with uber producer Timberland taking the helm, it all seems to fit in nice and snug and brings the entire production together.

Empire should be on your watch list this coming Sunday night.  Mark it down!  Sunday, March 1st, 9pm on Channel 10.

The Return of The X-Files? FOX Says Yes!

Anderson and Duchovny could return to their famous alter-egos!
Anderson and Duchovny could return to their famous alter-egos!

Thanks to the success of 24’s limited run reboot last year, FOX have begun to look at other favorite shows from their back catalog that could also do with a comeback including one small show about little green men.

Fox TV Group chairman Gary Newman has confirmed that talks have begun to look at bringing back sci-fi hit The X-Files starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson – who apparently are all interested in revisiting the characters that kick started their careers (X-Files creator Chris Carter included!)  Another Fox TV Group chairman, Dana Walden, also confirmed that if and when the reboot was to happen, it will be with it’s two main leads in Duchovny and Anderson but was quick to state that no ‘creative’ talks have taken place.

With David prepping for his new series Aquarius and Gillian working in the UK (The Fall) and on the new series of Hannibal timing will be the biggest player in ensuring the project would have any chance to move forward.

The news comes off the back of whispers of a possible limited reboot for Prison Break, but FOX have stated they were in fact, just whispers….for now.

The X-Files became an instant cult classic when it premiered back in 1993, running for more than 200 episodes over nine seasons before ending in 2002.

IWhat do you think?  Would the X-Files work in a limited series format like 24?  Sound off in the comments below!

Does GLEE Still Have an Audience?

Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss) Cuddle Up in the Glee Season 5 Finale -Source Provided

Does anyone still watch Glee anymore?  It’s a fair question to ask now that the phenomenon that was once everywhere and totally unavoidable has seemed to slowly fade away and die off.  The show that gave us the term ‘Gleeks’ and were constantly featured in the iTunes singles and album charts and even gave us a 3D concert movie now no longer seems to have the pulling power it once had.

In America, the season 5 finale drew only 1.9 million viewers (in it’s hey day – season 2, Glee was pulling in over 12 million viewers) and was even beaten by the finale of the CW’s The Originals.  So dire are the ratings that Fox Entertainment chairman KevinReilly stated that they plan to trim Glee’s final season from it’s standard 22 episodes to just 13.

Here in Australia, the musical comedy drew big ratings for network ten, but now, 5 seasons on, the show has been relegated to the channel’s second station – Eleven, with the season 5 finale airing tomorrow night, May 16th at 7:30pm.

Remember the last time Glee appeared in the iTunes charts?

So the question begs to be asked.  What happened?  Have audiences grown too old for the show?  Did Glee jump the shark somewhere along the way?  Could the death of star Cory Monteith play a part in people turning off?

Either way, die-hard Gleeks will be happy to know that they still have at a minimum another 13 episodes for the final season.

GLEE season 6 story line speculation

What do you think?  Is it time for Gleeks to close the curtain for the final time?

Fox Releases New Gotham Trailer

Image

Not only have FOX announced a 13 episode order of their new Batman prequel series Gotham, they also today, released a new sneak peek trailer for the upcoming series.

Gotham is a prequel series to the Batman story and will tell the origin of James Gordon (Benjamin McKenzie) as he works his way up to the role commissioner of Gotham City and will introduce us to well-known and popular villains early in their evil careers.  Penguin, Catwoman, Riddler, and Poison Ivy are all set to be featured.

“GOTHAM is an origin story of the great DC Comics super villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”), GOTHAM follows one cop’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.”

Along with Benjamin McKenzie, Camren Bicondova will play a young Selina Kyle, David Mazouz, a  young Bruce Wayne, Donal Logue as Detective Harvey Bullock, Zabryna Guevara as Captain Essen, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin and Jada Pinkett Smith as Fish Mooney.

Let’s hope when Gotham airs in the US fall that it ends up better than what’s been seen in early drafts of the pilot script.  Speaking with a source who had seen an early draft of the pilot script “the dialogue is horrendous and filled with terrible one liners and cliche catchphrases that are reminiscent of a bad 60’s comic book based TV series

Gotham is set to premier in the fall for US viewers.
