Best of 2016: TV Characters

Standing out is hard to do in a television land that is as wide and varied as it is today.  In most cases, it’s the lead who takes front and center and other times, it’s those side characters who just pull you in and make you love them.

From an actress and a single mother trying to balance work and home life to a brassy best friend who tells it like it is to a family keeping many secrets to an actress blurring the lines between acting and reality, check out my list of the 12 best TV Characters for 2016.

12: Doris (Ali Wong) – American Housewife [New Entry]

doris

Playing on her ‘non threatening Asian diversity’ within the snooty town of Westport, Doris (Ali Wong) has been able to share the dismissive views of best friend Katie (Katy Mixon) while also being able to mingle with the popular green-smoothie-drinking fit moms, who Katie literally hates.  Doris has no qualms about pushing her take-no-prisoners, hands on approach to parenting (which involves lots of yelling and eating strange meats in broth) onto Katie’s children.

11: Marcia Clark (Sarah Paulson) – American Crime Story [New Entry]

american-crime-story-01

Finding herself playing in the big league with the OJ Simpson trial, Marcia Clark (Sarah Paulson) found herself facing a giant brick wall right from the go.  From her personal dealings of a crumbling marriage and a nasty custody battle to how she dressed and did her hair for court, Clark, it seems was never going to win.  Thrust into the public eye, Paulson’s Clark offered up a deeper and thoughtful look into the most talked about woman of the time that was often overlooked for lesser, inessential topics.

10: The Morgans – Home and Away [New Entry]

landscape-1464862149-soaps-home-and-away-morgans

When Tori Morgan (Penny McNamee) first appeared in Summer Bay as the new doctor, none of us were prepared for the overloaded baggage she was hiding – her and her brothers (James Stewart, Jackson Heywood and Orpheus Pledger) were in witness protection.  Their parents killed by top dogs within a drug syndicate, their covers were blown, had no one they could trust and faced having to run again.  The Morgans added a major dash of drama to the bay that has been sorely missing since Charlotte’s (Erika Heynatz) murder last year.

9: Darryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) – The Walking Dead [Re-Entry from 2014]

norman-reedus-stars-as-daryl-dixon-in-amcs-the-walking-dead-season-6

The confident, lone wolf we’ve all come to love has been through the wringer this season on The Walking Dead.  His lash out at Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) resulted in the death of good friend Glenn (Steven Yuen) and subsequently saw him taken into Negan’s custody, thrown into an isolation cell and tortured in an attempt to break him.  Holding onto the grief and guilt of Glenn’s death is the only thing keeping Darryl sane while being tortured.

8: Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey) – Game of Thrones [New Entry]

lady-mormont

The pint sized warrior, the Lady of Bear Island Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey) proved herself to be a formidable leader as she held the cards to back Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) and Sansa Starks’ (Sophie Turner) attack on Ramsey Bolton to reclaim Winterfell.  Her blistering speech to the bickering houses of Manderley, Glover and Cerwyn showed that while Jon may have finally killed Ramsey, Lyanna is the one who has become the people’s champ and a force to be reckoned with.

7: Bea Smith (Danielle Cormack) – Wentworth [New Entry]

bea

With all focus this past season on Joan (Pamela Rabe) entering Wentworth as a prisoner, the side story arc to this season featuring the blossoming romance between Bea (Danielle Cormack) and Allie (Kate Jenkinson) showed a more open yet vulnerable side to the prison top dog.  While the relationship was used to expose Bea’s weaknesses to both Joan and Kaz (Tammy Macintosh), this relationship ultimately proved to be Bea’s strength, believing Joan had given Allie an overdose, she sacrificed herself to put Joan behind bars for a very long time.

6: Agnes Mary Winstead (Kathy Bates) – American Horror Story: Roanoke [New Entry]

kathy-bates-butcher

While the premise for this latest season of American Horror Story was fantastic, the second half of the season became a total mess with one shinning mark – that of Agnes Mary Winstead (Kathy Bates) AKA – The Butcher.  Agnes’ became a victim of her own sudden rise to fame after My Roanoke Nightmare became a massive television hit and earned herself a Saturn Award best actress nomination.  After delving right into the role of The Butcher, Agnes was diagnosed with  schizoaffective disorder, unable to distinguish between fact and fiction and wholly embodied the woman with a penchant for meat cleavers.

5: Jamie Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) – Game of Thrones [New Entry]

game-thrones-season-6-jamie

Season 6 of GoT was one full of loss for Jamie Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) as he mourned the death of his daughter Myrcella (Nell Tiger Free) and was removed from his position in the Kingsguard by his own son Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman) who, later on, also died taking his own life after his mother Cersei (Lena Headey) set alight half of Kings Landing.  Discovering that the woman he loves was responsible for the act that pushed Tommen to take his own life looks set to push Jamie into darker personal territory as he struggles with alliance next season.

4: Bonnie Winterbottom (Liza Weil) – How to get away with Murder [#8 in 2015]

1472824892_bonnie-winterbottom

We’ve seen Bonnie (Liza Weil) fall back into old habits this past season of How to get Away With Murder as she continuously battled with boss Annalise (Viola Davis) over the treatment of Annalise’s former right hand man Frank (Charlie Weber) now on the run after his murderous past was fully revealed.  With Laurel (Lauren Velez) and Annalise trying to find Frank, Bonnie took it upon herself to track him down and try and coax him back after discovering he had killed her abusive father leading the two to spend a very intense and revealing night together.

3: Sam Fox (Pamela Adlon) – Better Things [New Entry]

better-things

There’s no high glamour or Hollywood high life when it comes to Better Things‘ Sam Fox (Pamela Adlon).  She’s not a struggling actress but she’s also not readily recognized on the street by the everyday person.  She’s an actress and it’s her job and it’s this level of fame she attains while also a single mother to three girls, all of whom require a bulk of her attention to make it through each and every day, that makes Sam relatable.  Woman on the verge…..perhaps.  Woman trying to get a minute to have ‘dirty facetime’ with a recent hookup..seems to fit better when describing Sam Fox.

2: Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) – Stranger Things [New Entry]

joycebyers

Joyce Byers (in a defining comeback role for Winona Ryder) is a single mother, relatively poor and wanting answers regarding her missing son Will (Noah Schnapp).  Her less than affluent standing within the small town of Hawkins, Indiana has the locals not believing her son has gone missing, but despite her lack of influence within the town, she challenges each and every person – right up-to the Police Chief.

When she discovers she can communicate with her missing son through lights, Joyce finds a confidence and a voice to believe in what she is doing is actually real despite the constant knock downs from those telling her, her son is dead.

1: Quinn King (Constance Zimmer) – UnReal [#2 in 2015]

maxresdefault

Walking into season two of UnReal (and the new season of Everlasting) shouting the motto “MONEY, DICK, POWER!!” and ready to hand over the reigns of Everlasting to Rachel (Shiri Appleby) Quinn (Constance Zimmer) found herself not ready to let go when former boss Chet (Craig Bierko) returned to the fray looking to take control back of ‘his’ show. Quinn’s battle to maintain a hold on the show all came to a head in the fourth episode when she learns her father has died and only able to internalize her pain for a short while, Quinn literally opens the biggest can of whoop-ass ever seen.  No one, not even the studio office was saved from her scathing breakdown that saw her literally throw monitors across the room.

But Quinn is a quick one to recover.  She’s a smart ballsy woman who has this inane ability to see the knife coming before it hits her back and has a counter-attack already in play by the time that knife is on it’s way down.  By the end of the season, Quinn retained control of Everlasting and her Money, Dick, Power relationship with Rachel was as strong as it started out at seasons start.

Golden Globes 2015 Snubs, Surprises and Nominations

Scandal's Kerry Washington once again misses out on a nomination.
Scandal’s Kerry Washington once again misses out on a nomination.

There’s a whole lot of WTF floating around social media and Hollywood at the moment and it’s all aimed around the recent Golden Globe nominations announced today.  The general consensus is that is a mix of “did they finally get it right?” and “Did [insert name here] really miss out again?”.

This years nominations brought fourth a change in what to expect for nominees.  No Modern Family (gasp) nominations, new shows such as How to get away with Murder and Transparent finding themselves with big time nods, Game of Thrones’s Peter Dinklage mysteriously absent from the list and a small show about virgins getting everyone talking thanks to two serious nominations.

Along with Modern Family’s surprise omission, Scandal and star Kerry Washington were both amiss along with favorite Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and even Park’s and Recreation lead (and Globes host- AND last years winner for best actress in a comedy) Amy Poehler missed out.

Other notable omissions include Big Bang’s Jim Parsons (nominated three times with one win) and HBO’s Veep which only landed a nom for lead Julia Louis-Dreyfus and just like last years best actress comedy winner Poehler, last years best actor comedy winner – Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine Nine) is also missing from the list.

Perhaps (to me) the biggest omission is any mention of Lisa Kudrow and The Comeback.  How is it possible that Kudrow, who has the inane ability to play both hysterical and utterly tragic, not even get a look in for her work as the completely jaded Valerie Cherish?

Moving along from the snubs, perhaps the biggest surprise this year is the inclusion on the CW’s Jane The Virgin.  The show picked up two nominations (best lead actress comedy and best comedy) and is the first time the network has ever received a nomination. While I’m yet to indulge in the world of Jane and her virginity, the general feeling around these nominations is one of good and much deserved – perhaps I may need to binge this over the Xmas break!

GoT Season 5 Will Not Feature Bran Stark and Hodor

Kristian Nairn as Hodor in Game of Thrones
Kristian Nairn as Hodor in Game of Thrones

In a bit of rather interesting news from the world of Game of Thrones, it seems Bran Stark and loyal follower Hodor will be absent in the upcoming fifth season.

Speaking to Yahoo, Kristian Nairn who plays Hodor revealled neither he nor partner in crime Isaac Hemptead-Wright (who plays Bran Stark) will be seen in GoT’s season 5.  “We have a season off and we have a year’s hiatus, solely because I imagine our storyline is up to the end of the books,” he said. “So, I get my year off now to do Rave of Thrones and gallivant all over the world.

Bran and Hodor’s travels to beyond the wall played a significant part in season 4’s story to which we were left with them meeting the mysterious ‘children’ at the Weirwood tree beyond the wall with the three eyed crow who revealed more about Bran’s greensight ability.

Michelle Fairley Reveals Game of Thrones Lady Stoneheart Absence

Michelle Fairley as Catelyn Stark
Michelle Fairley as Catelyn Stark

Fans of the “A Song of Fire and Ice” books (which is the source material for Game of Thrones) might have felt they missed something quite pivotal when the season four finale of GoT came and passed.

Where the heck is Lady Stoneheart?

It was a question that rang out after the season four finale when Lady Stoneheart didn’t show up, as she did in the epilogue of “A Storm Of Swords” and now fans of the book and television series are wanting to know where she is.

Alex Graves, who directed the final episode, revealed that there were no plans whatsoever to include the pivotal character during that time, though it didn’t necessarily mean that we would not see Lady Stoneheart in the future.

Is this good news?  It was until actress Michelle Fairley spoke with EW recently.  “The character’s dead,” Michelle told EW. “She’s dead.” EW revealed that Michelle was told it would likely never happen, and when asked about a preference — Lady Stoneheart or no Lady Stoneheart — Michelle said, “I knew the arc, and that was it. They can’t stick to the books 100 percent. It’s impossible— they only have 10 hours per season.

“They have got to keep it dramatic and exciting, and extraneous stuff along the way gets lost in order to maintain the quality of brilliant show.”

For those not familiar with the books and are sitting there wondering who the heck is Lady Stoneheart and why does it involve actress Michelle Fairley…well, Lady Stoneheart is Catelyn Stark’s reanimated corpse and of course, Catelyn Stark was played by Michelle Fairley.

After her throat was slit at the Red Wedding, Catelyn was thrown into a river and left to float there for three days before she was pulled out by Lord Beric Dondarrion (who you will know as the leader of the Brotherhood without Banners) and who resurrected Catelyn by giving his life for hers.

The somewhat-brought-back-to-life Catelyn then adopted the name Lady Stoneheart as she joined the Brotherhood Without Banners to lead them in mercilessly executing all traitors – with special attention paid to the Lannisters and Freys, and anyone who associates with them.

760003_GOT407_081613_HS_DSC26231

The purposeful cutting of Lady Stoneheart has left many people wondering how this will affect the story-arcs for certain characters including Jamie Lannister and Brienne of Tarth for the shows fifth season as all three characters feature quite heavily in season five’s source material “A Feast of Crows”.

Says Alex Graves “”No, they didn’t do it. It was never on the docket to do this season — ever.”

Game of Thrones returns in 2015.

Foxtel on Lannisters, Pirates and Game of Thrones

Image

Foxtel’s head of corporate affairs, Bruce Meagher has been a busy little bee of of late.  He’s been tucked away in his neat little corner typing away an open letter to you, to me, to everyone in Australia in fact, about how disgusted he is with our incessant need to illegally download Foxtels exclusive Game of Thrones here in Australia.

Clearly he’s been working on this little piece ever since Foxtel signed on the HBO dotted line cutting out iTunes and Google Play from also offering Game of Thrones to fans who were not Foxtel subscribers.

Titled “Piracy: At least the Lannisters Pay their debts” (in which, the title alone makes you feel like we should be indebted to Foxtel for even providing us with Game of Thrones in the first place) Meagher literally compares illegal downloading of Game of Thrones to “stealing a  Ferrari on the basis that the waiting list is too long or the price is too high.”

He pleads and begs with us to “think of the actors, extras, writers, camera crew, make up artists, editors, special effects teams and the many others who make Game of Thrones” before we hit that torrent download button and had Meagher continued down this ‘look, illegal downloading is wrong’ line then I’m sure I wouldn’t have scoffed at the letter as a whole.

See, after calling torrent downloaders car thieves and uninformed pirates, Meagher then proceeds to turn his open letter about a television provider dealing with rife downloading of a highly popular television show into a written piece of extended advertising for Foxtel, it’s Foxtel Go and Play services and how awesome it is when compared along side to iTunes and “similar services”

Cripes.

You know what, in the end, you’ll get more out his Meagher’s open letter by the time you hit the comments section.  It’s an absolute gem to which Meagher originally attempts to rebut before he stops responding.

While I don’t condone the practice of torrenting shows, when push comes to shove and someone decides to monopolise a product that was once available to us through other avenues…..

“The Lannisters may not be a pleasant lot, but they, at least, always pay their debts.” – way to keep it cool Bruce.

Game of Thrones Renewed for Two More Years

Image

Considering Game of Thrones season 4 premiere episode broke a whole slew of records for not only HBO but also Foxtel’s Showcase channel, it’s no real surprise that Game of Thrones has officially been renewed for not only a fifth season, but a sixth as well.

Showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff have already signed on for two more seasons, and actors Michel Huisman and Nathalie Emmanuel were promoted to series regulars for Season 5.

The series of civil war, extreme weather and mythical creatures is shaping up to be the Time Warner Inc-owned network’s biggest show since The Sopranos.  After the slaughter of the main members of the Stark family in the “Red Wedding” episode (Myhsa) last season, the season four premiere saw the remaining Starks coming to terms with the deaths of their kin.  Arya Stark, played by 16-year-old Maisie Williams, took a dark, cruel turn as she exacted revenge for her family.

Game of Thrones airs Monday Nights 7:30pm on Showcase

Game of Thrones Returns Tonight for Season 4

Image

It’s being billed as the biggest season yet and cost more than $100 million dollars to make.  It’s cult TV at it’s best with it’s fan base akin to that of The Walking Dead.  Game of Thrones returns tonight for Season 4.

Coming in at the midway point in the planned seven-season adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s still unfinished series of novels, A Saga Of Fire and Ice, season 4 is mostly taken from the second half of the third novel and was subsequently filmed in ten parts.  Picking up right after where we left off last season, the warring families of Westeros, the Lannisters, the Tyrells and the Baratheons are still reeling from the aftermath of the gruesome ‘Red Wedding’, which saw the slaughter of King of the North Rob Stark, his mother Catelyn, his wife and unborn child.

The Wildlings are on the march south as are the mysterious un-dead White Walkers and somewhere in the east Daenerys is continuing her quest to reclaim the throne with an army of freed slaves and three dragons at her side.

There’s a new faction in town to look out for with the arrival of the charming (and somewhat dangerous) Oberyn Martell, from the kingdom of Dorne, who is also hell bent on revenge for past Lannister murders and a tribe of heavily-scarred cannibals  from beyond the Wall called the Thenn who  have formed an uneasy alliance with Mance Rayder and the so-called wildlings advancing on Castle Black and are threatening death and destruction on all who cross their path.

There’s bloodlust, sex, greed and revenge to keep most fans salivating for more.

Game of Thrones returns tonight, 7:30pm on Showcase via FOXTEL.

Extended Preview of Game Of Thrones Season 4

Image

The new season of Game of Thrones is fast approaching, and to whet the appetite of very patient fans, HBO have released an extended 15 minute trailer for the shows up coming fourth season.

The trailer – Game of Thrones Ice and Fire: A Foreshadowing includes on-camera interviews with cast members including Gwendoline Christie (Brienne), Peter Dinklage (Tyrion) and Natalie Dormer (Margaery).

Want to know more about season four?  Read about it here!

The fourth season it slated to begin, here in Australia on April 7th on SHOWCASE for FOXTEL subscribers, though in a deal made with HBO, it means Game of Thrones will be an exclusive to SHOWCASE virtually blocking iTunes and Quickflix from fast-tracking the show to non FOXTEL subscribers.

The news gets even worse for those wanting to legally download the series.  The deal between the two networks also means that iTunes and Quickflix cannot offer ANY episode of season 4 until FOXTEL have aired every single episode of the season.

Any people wonder why illegal downloading (especially of Game of Thrones) is so rife in Australia.

For fans not wanting to pay a minimum of $75 per month for the premium channel on FOXTEL, those with FOXTEL PLAY online subscriptions (which is a little bit cheaper) will be able to access the new episodes.

Game of Thrones, Season 4, begins April 7th on SHOWTIME for FOXTEL subscribers.
