Less Girls and More Accessible, Please Like Me Season 2

I wonder how many reviews of Josh Thomas’ Please Like Me will use the phrase “yes Josh, we really do like you”?  In fairness, after watching the first two episodes from season two that were available for preview, the saying is more than warranted.

Unlike Please Like Me‘s first outing, which saw too much crammed into the meager six episodes offered up, we’re brought back into Josh’s hectic and awkward world but this time, the feeling is much more paced and easy with familiar faces including Tom (Thomas Ward), Claire (Caitlin Stacey) Niamh (Nikita Leigh-Pritchard) and mum Rose (Debra Lawrence) already fleshed out enough for us to willingly allow new characters like new housemate Patrick (Charles Cottier) and potential love interest for Tom, Jenny (Charlotte Nicado) to enter this frenetic world we’ve been waiting to come back to.

This frenetic world that Josh has created is filled with house parties, unrequited love, adventures in baby sitting, self depreciation, mental illness, awkward conversations with parents, discussions of penis size, unexpected visitors and probably the most uncomfortable “saddest recount of losing your virginity” competition that has ever existed – and this is just in the first two episodes.

Thomas, just as he did in season one, manages to mix his quirky awkwardness with that of a young man we’ve come to root for with an effortless flair and is now taking the foot off the “i’m not good enough” pedal just enough that the feeling of self sorrow that surrounded Josh in season one is lessened in this second outing.

Josh isn’t the only character to have undergone some personal development between seasons. Best friend Tom has a new-found confidence with women, probably his way of dealing with the departure of girlfriend Claire to Germany, that see’s Tom more confident in his approach and confident of achieving his goal.  Even Niamh has undergone a change  – gone are her nagging and manipulating ways now replaced with a girl who’s less assured and assertive.

The standout so far, without a doubt, is Debra Lawrence as mum Rose.  The erratic and unstable episodes caused by her bipolar disorder are spot-on and as Rose struggles to deal with doing what she’s told and doing what she wants is a battle that will affect those closest to her. The first time we see Rose this season is a scene that lets us all in on just how far downhill she has gone since the death of Aunt Peg.

In it’s first season, Please Like Me found itself being compared to Lena Dunham’s self penned series Girls – a comparison that was likely and to a point correct, but now, Please Like Me feels a bit more real and accessible than Girls ever was.  A scene that see’s both of Josh’s housemates preoccupied with hookups while Josh is stuck babysitting in the lounge room is a scenario that many currently in or have lived in shared accommodation can identify with.

It’s been a long awaited and very much welcome return for Please Like Me and Josh Thomas to our screens, and yes Josh, we do like you!  Anyone that can bring Denise Drysdale back to our screens and uttering obscenities is someone I will always like!

Please Like Me – Season Two begins Friday August 8th on Pivot and Tuesday August 12th on ABC2.

With the August 12th Australian premiere date looming ever so close, a new sneak peek look at the second season of Josh Thomas’ comedy Please Like Me has been released (finally!)

With the slew of behind the scenes photos being published via the shows official Facebook page, it’s nice to actually see a look at what to expect when the show returns next month.

Check it out below:

Tom (Thomas Ward) and Claire (Caitlin Stasey) are back along with Josh’s ex boyfriend Geoffrey (Wade Briggs) and a new housemate-slash-possible love interest in the form of Patrick (Charles Cottier – ex Dexter from Home and Away) is along for the ride!

Josh also used the Facebook Page to announce that not only will Please Like Me be starting on August 12th but that the show has already received a green light for a third season!  Not bad for a show that was delegated to ABC2’s digital channel and virtually left for dead after it’s first season.

The third season, consisting of a further ten episodes will begin production in 2015.

It’s been a long time coming, but, with the August 8th premiere date of Josh Thomas’s Please Like Me Season 2 looming ever so close, Pivot have finally released a very short season 2 sneak peek video!

Check out the video here!

So what can we expect from Josh in season two?  Well the story-line has been pushed forward a few years (not known how many exactly) and see’s Josh (Josh Thomas) living with his best friend Tom (Thomas Ward) and new potential love interest Patrick (Charles Cottier – who Aussie fans will recognize as Dexter from Home and Away)

The time lapse will also see a new addition to Josh’s extended family with Josh’s dad and wife Mae having a baby while Josh’s mum (Deborah Lawrence) is now living in a psychiatric hospital and yes, Josh’s ex Geoffrey (Wade Briggs) even makes an appearance!

Caitlin Stacey (who is currently filming TV series Reign) is back as Josh’s ex girlfriend Claire who finds herself going through a rough patch with boyfriend Tom.

Please Like Me Season 2 has also been extended from 6 episodes to 10 episodes!

Season 2 is scheduled to begin on August 8th on ABC2 in Australia and on Pivot in America.

As noted back in August last year, Josh Thomas and his quirky and awkward comedy Please Like Me, will be back for a second season all thanks to a partnership between the ABC and Pivot TV in America.

Working together with the ABC, Pivot TV announced that season two is expected to air in August this year – both in Australia and the US with 10 brand new half hour episodes.

In the first season, Josh was dumped by his girlfriend, gained and lost a boyfriend, came out to his parents, lost his eccentric great aunt, and moved back in to live with his bipolar mother after her suicide attempt. In season two, Josh tries to get through the day without upsetting anyone, while the new season also welcomes a new dog, a new rabbit and a new baby.

“We are so proud to be working with Josh and the incredibly talented team behind ‘Please Like Me’ and can’t wait to get started shooting the second season,” said Pivot Executive SVP, Scripted Programming Holly Hines back on Jan 11th. “His voice and experiences represent this generation like few others right now and we were thrilled to see how others fell in love with the first season just as much as we did.”

While season one was slow to find fans, the coming-of-age comedy has received critical acclaim in the U.S. and Australia and named one of the “Best TV Shows of 2013” by publications including Entertainment Weekly, The New Yorker, Time Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, and The Atlantic.

Josh Thomas Works on Please Like Me Season Two

Please Like Me’s Josh Thomas and Wade Briggs

Good to see comedian Josh Thomas is back hard at work writing the new season of his comedy Please Like Me.  Working with both Australian network ABC2 and US network Pivot TV, Thomas will be bringing back his popular comedy with 10 all new episodes for next year.

After asking Pivot how things are going for season two:

It’s been an interesting ride for Thomas and his show which was originally pushed from ABC1 to the digital channel of ABC2 then once aired, Please Like Me was pretty much all but dead before new US network Pivot picked up the show and announced they were interested in creating a second season of the show.

No word yet on co-stars Wade Briggs, Caitlin Stacey, Deborah Lawrence or Thomas Ward and their return to the new season.

Please Like Me is currently re-airing it’s first season on ABC1 (funny that) Wednesdays at 10pm and will return next year for Season 2!

It’s the announcement fans have been waiting for – Josh Thomas and his self penned and created show, Please Like Me will be back for a second season – finally – and we can thank a new television network in America for this news. The Pivot Channel in America made the announcement of the second season before the August 1st USA premier date of Season 1.

Given little love by the ABC network in Australia (it was moved from ABC1 to the digital ABC2), Please Like Me and it’s stars including Thomas and Wade Briggs have garnered an impressive and well earned cult following – due largely to the word-of-mouth/social media attention the show received after it’s end in April this year.

It’s been announced that Pivot will co-produce (with ABC2) and source funds to bring a second season to our screens.

Speaking with FOX FM’s Fifi & Jules this afternoon, Thomas announced that Pivot plan to buck the trend of re-making the series, instead, opting to continue with the cast that featured in the shows original series and continue on with the storyline though how this may be achieved is still unsure as star Caitlin Stasey is busy filming American fantasy series Reign, and has signed on for Tomorrow When The War Began 2.

Reviews in the states for the show have been positive, likening Thomas and his show to that of Girls star and creator Lena Dunham.  The Miami Herald writes “Please Like Me is the brainchild of Australian comic Josh Thomas, based on his own social awkwardness. Not a terribly new idea, but when it’s treated intelligently and enacted by a lovable sad sack named Josh Thomas, it can be irresistible.”

Zap2it.com “Though Thomas may rely on the painfully awkward moments he’s experienced while coming of age (and there are plenty in the first half-hour), he’s crafted a character who is inherently likable. The same can’t really be said for Girls Hannah Horvath — or anyone else in her world”

The best part about all of this?  Pivot plan to up the show run from 6 episodes to 10, hopefully allowing a more easy flow to the story and timeline – an issue I found with season one.

Please Like Me is currently airing on the Pivot network, Thursdays at 8pm, and is now available to own on DVD in Australia.

What a Dive: Celebrity Splash Sinks

Divers Denise Drysdale and Nick Bracks in Celebrity Splash

Well the results are in and no amount of lifesaving will keep Channel 7’s new Celebrity Splash from sinking into never-to-be-seen again depths.

While just over 1.31 million viewers tuned in, reviews coming from the general public are less than forgiving.  Most are criticizing the stars for lowering themselves to such a level, others are annoyed with the amass of wasted space between dives.  Myself?  I was at a loss of words while watching.

The use of the word ‘celebrity‘ was most unsettling.  While contestants such as comedian and actor Josh Thomas and TV royalty Denise Drysdale may fall into that category, the rest of the cast was filled with sports stars (runner Tamsyn Lewis, cricketer Andrew Symonds and footballer Andrew Welsh) models (Nick Bracks and  Renae Ayris) and the in-betweeners (Radio host Adam Richards, Brynne Edelsten and Koby Abberton).

The smartest ‘celebrity‘ in this entire gig was Laura Csortan who ‘had to pull out due to injury’ before the first dive even began.  Smart girl.  She was quickly replaced by former Gladiator Derek Boyer who stunned everyone with a face first splash into the pool from the 10m diving board.

The most amusing thing about the show?  US diver and Splash judge Greg Louganis (looking even tanner than George Hamilton ever did) trying to act like he knew who it was he was judging.

Along side Louganis was Winter Olympian Alisa Camplin who exuded perkiness like an aging cheerleader and next to her, Aussie diver Matthew Mitchum who came off as snarky and bitchy (especially to an obviously uncomfortable Josh Thomas).

The fact alone that not only did these stars have to endure performing a dive in front of a live audience (I’m pretty sure there were more people in the stadium for Splash than there ever was for It’s a Knockout) but they also had to endure under the cuff taunts from hosts Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies as well as being judged on their efforts after only a six week crash course.

In the end, everybody on this show only have themselves to blame for the situation they have found themselves in.

Will Splash hold the same viewers as it did last night?  I doubt it.  If comments like “I will never get that time back” or “What a waste, is this what channel 7 can offer us?” are anything to go by, Splash may find itself in a watery grave very soon.

Please Like Me Bows Out For Season 1

Image
Josh Thomas and Deborah Lawrence in Please Like Me

Let me put it out there – I like ‘Please Like Me‘.  It’s funny yet has a serious side, plays lightly on the hipster/nerdy/gay/racial stereotypes yet knows not to be too full of itself.  The characters too are likable, well written and well acted.

However, a downside to this show was how ill-timed story lines were thrust upon us.  Some arcs were sped up (lead character Josh has been dumped by his girlfriend then came out as gay and ended the same episode in a relationship with a man) while story-lines involving his parents and their divorce seem to sit well timed and not too rushed.  A case of too much story to tell in the space of 6 half hour episodes.

That aside, the show has slowly been building a steady fan-base, with more to come with the DVD release due soon after the end of season 1, and many fans are wanting to know if a second season is in the works and if cast member Caitlin Stasey will return after recently being attached to a new pilot in the USA.

There’s no word yet on what ABC2 plans to do with the show after tonight.

‘Please Like Me’ end it’s 6 episode first season run tonight on ABC2 at 9:30pm.
