Where to Next for the Call of Duty Series. WWII and Beyond.

call_of_duty_ghosts

The official announcement of the next installment in the Call Of Duty series has just been announced confirming the setting to be in World War 2 bringing the first person shooter series back to its ‘boots on ground’ origins (Call of Duty 2 from 2005) but this time with Sledgehammer Games (MW3 and Advanced Warfare) taking the reins.

Taking the series back to its beginnings, according to Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg (in an interview with Polygon.com) was a plan that was put into motion three years ago and was not based off the less than positive player response to 2016’s ultra futuristic based Infinite Warfare, noting back in 2014 when the decision was made, the player passion for the historical war setting.

With the high praise for Modern Warfare remastered, which came as an add-on to the Infinite Warfare release, it really is no surprise that Activision have decided to go back to what CoD players loved most from the series but there is that lingering worry of bringing back a classic while keeping it fresh and modern so as not to bring about that ‘seen it, played it’ feel that is always lurking when playing Modern Warfare Remastered.

While the game (MW Remastered) itself is a stellar moment within the series, (and one I am enjoying playing at the moment over the Infinite Warfare release) the remastered release of the 2007 issue showcases just how dated the game is when compared to more modern releases.  Developed by Raven Software, the remastered issue offered nothing really new to the original release with updated graphics, rendering, sounds and animations.  The inclusion of semi-customizable multiplayer characters (including female skins) were a nice touch along with the ‘depot’ which allowed players to spend their game earned tokens on mystery cases filled with player skins, weapon skins and calling cards and emblems.

The question now begs, with WWII the official setting for the next Call of Duty outing, do Activison have plans to continue down the route we’ve traveled down once before?

The series has delved into WWII numerous times with 2003’s Call of Duty, 2005’s Call of Duty 2, 2006’s Call of Duty 3 and 2008’s Call of Duty: World at War.  2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops took place in the Cold War and partially within the Vietnam War while all other outings have focused on fictional modern era and futuristic warfare.

One setting that the franchise has never delved into (and one I personally would like to see) is gangland/urban warfare.  While Call of Duty is military based, there’s nothing stating the series couldn’t delve into this area without compromising their tactical themed game-play.  The gangland-and-or-urban warfare theme has featured within games such as Grand Theft Auto and the Saints Row series, but is yet to be given the first person shooter treatment that games like Call of Duty offers.

SR
Saints Row feature Gangland Warfare, a theme yet to be seen within the CoD Series.

Details about the multiplayer within CoD WWII are still sparse to none but it has been revealed that a ‘social space’ called Headquarters will see players, much like that in Destiny, all converge to show off gear and interact with each other before heading off into a match with Sledgehammers Chief Development Officer Michael Condrey confirming to me that character customization AND playable female soldiers will both feature in this next game.

The Nintendo Classic Mini is here in Australia but Getting one isn’t that easy.

The Nintendo Classic Console

The very retro and very anticipated Nintendo Classic Mini: Nintendo Entertainment System hit Australia this morning but good luck finding one for retail price as they are already at a sold out status.

Target Australia’s website are directing customers Nintendo’s Facebook page for more info about the sold out status (where customers are complaining some stores only had 10 consoles in stock for sale) while BigW Australia’s website has crashed due to overwhelming demand.

Customers were able to place pre-orders for the classic console from as early as July this year.

So now it’s sold out, the question begs is there another shipment?  The simple answer is YES but it’s a very open yes.  Nintendo have confirmed another shipment is due our way “sometime in early December” and that’s it.  No word on exactly when or how many units are coming our way or when we can start placing pre orders for the new console.

The retro inspired classic mini features 30 classic games from Bubble Bobble to Super Mario Brothers 1, 2 and 3 and Double Dragon 2 among a list full of fan favorites.

For those who can’t wait until the next shipment can always hit eBay where scalpers currently have their $99 classic console listed for as high as $1300!

UPDATE: Monday Nov 14th.

EB games Australia, it appears, are doing daily pre-order runs via their website for the insanely popular console.  Today’s first run saw the ‘undisclosed’ amount sold out within minutes and crashing their website leaving many many customers frustrated with the lack of preparation by the company.

As of this post, EB’s website is noting another batch will be available for pre-order tomorrow from midday AEDT but as noted, there’s no disclosure about how many consoles are actually available for the pre-order.  For those trying to find those elusive extra controllers, EB have noted that they are still awaiting news of another shipment and that they have none currently available in stock.

In response to the backlash, EB released a statement noting for today’s pre-order, they had increased their server space to account for 30,000 people – twice as much as the norm and for tomorrow, they’ll double that again for 60,000 people.  The bottom of the statement reads “Stock for this item will be extremely limited”.

Mother Monster AKA Lady Gaga has joined forces with Mattel’s Monster High brand to create the newest member of the Monster High gang known as ‘Zomby Gaga’.

In a collaboration between Gaga, her sister Natali Germanotta and Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation, Zomby Gaga is the first ‘celebrity’ to join the fashion doll line and dons a tailored black suit with long flowing pink ponytail and ball of bubblegum as worn by the singer in her “born this way” video clip.  An alternate outfit consisting of mesh tights and a sleeveless shirt is also included.

Speaking to InStyle Magazine, Germanotta says “For Gaga, the doll is all about inspiring “kindness, bravery, and acceptance.”  Monster High has also donated to the Born This Way Organization to help support the foundations mission and is encouraging fans to pledge to spread kindness here.

Zomby Gaga is making her way to Australian shores as a BIG W online exclusive, with   pre-orders opening on Tuesday October 18th via their official site.  Please note that any pre-order links are not expected to go live until the day of pre-orders.

Orange is the New Black and the New Pop! Vinyl.

wideorange-new-black_cast-620x349

I do love me some Pop! Vinyl figures.  While my collection is small (Walking Dead’s Daryl Dixon and Injured Daryl Dixon – AHS Coven’s Fiona Goode – Game of Thrones Brienne of Tarth and Orphan Black’s Alison Hendrix) there’s always room to add more and now, some of our favorite Litchfield inmates and prison guards are coming our way in mini vinyl form thanks to the highly popular Pop! Television series by Funko.

That’s right, mini versions of Piper (Taylor Schilling), Alex (Laura Prepon), Crazy Eyes (Uzo Aduba), Red (Kate Mulgrew) and Pornstache (Pablo Schreiber) are currently up for pre-order are and slated for a July 2015 release, which oddly enough, misses the season 3 premiere of the show.

I’m still waiting for my very own Pennsatucky with tinsel halo, bad teeth and wooden cross Pop!

Want your very own Alex or Piper?  Check out the pre-order links below from Entertainment Earth by clicking on each of the images!

Television announcement because you all I know I need me a Sydney Andrews as stripper Jungle Jane and Kimberly Shaw with removable wig Pop!
