Netflix’s Black Summer is your new Zombie Binge Watch

Courtesy of Netflix

A couple of weeks ago, Netflix quietly dropped a new ‘Netflix original’ series called Black Summer that has everything you need to fill that zombie void until The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead returns.

The series (apparently set within the same world as Z Nation – which I am yet to watch), all bleak and depressing in its stark blue wash, kicks off in the American suburbs only a few short weeks after the onset of a deadly outbreak where people are striving to make it to ‘the arena’, a military zoned rescue point. This is where we first meet our series heroine Rose (Jamie King) as she, her husband and daughter attempt to make it to the evacuation jeeps. But things don’t go to plan and it’s not long before Rose is flying solo, trying to get to her final destination.

The series introduces several other key figures along the way including *possible* criminal on the run Spears (Justin Chu Cary), Kyungsun (Christine Lee) a non-English speaking Korean woman and Lance (Kelsey Flower) who may possibly be the one character to offer a glaringly realistic view of just how an everyday Joe may go about trying to survive in a zombie apocalypse.

And this zombie apocalypse is different to the world in which we’re used to seeing. The zombie’s aren’t your slow-assed Sunday stroll zombies either. These buggers can run. Like fast. And turning them doesn’t take hours after death. It’s literally instantaneously as introduced in the opening episode.

While Black Summer makes for an engaging edge-of-your-seat show, there are a few misses scattered among the many hits that makes the show so great. The eight episodes are all scattered in length making some feel like they ended a little too quickly while others, a little too long. The pilot episode runs for just on 44 minutes allowing for character introduction and a decent look at the world they’re living in while the finale wraps up in a short 20 minute outing forcing the story line to jolt to a somewhat open ended finale.

And don’t be too worried if you feel like your’e missing an episode between 5 and 6. Episode five (Diner) is set entirely within an abandoned diner where the characters bicker and fight while Episode six (Heist) finds the same characters partaking in an extremely detailed heist on an underground warehouse. It’s a situation that is some cause of confusion considering the importance the heist plays on the rest of the season.

Black Summer series trailer

In the end, Black Summer is a series that is always on the go, even in the quietest of moments, there’s a sense of urgency, a sense of needing to keep moving as enemies both dead and alive are right around the corner. And its this constant tension that not only sets Black Summer apart from other zombie apocalypse shows but also makes for entertaining viewing.

Black Summer season one is not available to stream on Netflix.

X-men Danger Room Protocols Channels 90’s Animated Awesomness

wwbh4.gif

Ask any X-Men fan about the comic book series during the 90’s and one of the first things talked about is the kick-ass animated series that saw the ever popular mutants brought to life for the very first time.

Even though the series ended in 1997, the animated series remains a favorite for X-men fans and to this day, retains a very cool nostalgic vibe to each and every episode.

Cut to early 2016, where Canadian animator Joel Furtado drops a sneak peek look at his “love letter to Marvel”, his own take on the X-Men in animated-meets-arcade-game form via X-Men: Danger Room Protocols.  An 18 episode animated series that borrows heavily from the original animated series from the 90’s, that will see various and well known members of the X-men pitted against their most dangerous foes.

Check out the very cool trailer and a look at Joe and his plans for the series in the video below:

As you can see, everyone from Cyclops to Storm, Wolverine and Psylocke are all set to feature and battle it out against Mystique, Sabretooth, White Queen and Magneto with episode one featuring Wolverine and Jean Grey and titled ‘survival’ poised to be released on Joes YouTube Channel on Jan 19th – you know, that’s if Marvel and FOX don’t put a complete stop to the project before it ever see’s the light of day.

Either way, we’re loving the look and feel of what Danger Room Protocols is offering and can’t wait for the final product!

Update: Feb 2016 – Sadly, only one episode of this awesome work made the light of day…and for about 20 minutes before Marvel stepped in and shut the project down.  watch what creator Joe Furtado has to say about the situation over at his official website.

First Look at Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension

Something spooky this way comes....
Something spooky this way comes….

The brand new trailer for the sixth and final installment of the Paranormal Activity movie series has been released and is promising, once again, to offer movie goers a few jumps and scares while tying in and finalizing the story-line that has been played out over the past 5 movies.

With this final installment, we’re being promised that Toby will finally be revealed after eluding our eyes for so many films.  It’s producer Jason Blum’s way of putting an end to the series.  Speaking with bloody-disgusting.com he says “It’s coming to an end. This is it, the finale.  We’re saying it before the movie opens. We’re not going to grind this horror franchise into the ground. This will keep Paranormal Activity as part of this culture and this particular time in a really fantastic way”

The Ghost Dimension, directed by Gregory Plotkin, follows a new family, the Fleeges with father Ryan (Chris J. Murray), mother Emily (Brit Shaw) and their young daughter Leila (Ivy George), who move into a house and discover a video camera and a box of tapes in the garage.  When they look through the camera’s lens, they begin to see the paranormal activity happening around them — including the re-emergence of a young Kristi and Katie.

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension hits cinemas October 2015.

National Lampoon’s Vacation Reboot trailer is all About Chris Hemsworth..

Chris+Hemsworth+in+Vacation

And you can clearly see why Thor is nabbing all the attention from the newly released trailer for the National Lampoon reboot..and it’s not just for the blonde locks or chiseled physique..

The reboot puts Ed Helms (The Hangover trilogy) in charge as the now grown-up Rusty Griswold whose parents are of course Clark (Chevy Chase) and Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo)Griswold, the couple who famously took their kids on an ill-fated trip to WalleyWorld in the 1983 original National Lampoon’s Vacation.

Vacation see’s Ed, his wife Debbie(Christina Applegate) and family, recreate the exact same trip, though stopping along the way to visit Debbie’s sister Audrey (Leslie Mann) and her incredibly endowed husband Stone (Chris Hemsworth).  Check out the redband trailer below.

Vacation hit’s cinemas July 29th.

Game Talk: COD Black Ops 3 Reveal Trailer

Female soldiers will once again feature in this new release
Female soldiers will once again feature in this new release

Let me put it out there…..last years Call of Duty Advanced Warfare….well, to me…it was shit.  As a long time fan of the first person shooter series who has obsessively played every release since Call of Duty 2, I’ve enjoyed watching the game evolve with each new release…that was until exo suits with boost jumping was introduced.

To me, the new game play lost what made the series special…gone are the days going nuts in Nuketown and tinkering with snipers in Stonehaven replaced with trying to target an enemy flying across the sky while they boost from ledge to ledge.  I was hoping Treyarch would ditch this move with the release of Black Ops 3…but sadly, it seems as though they’ve taken the mechanics from Advanced Warfare and ‘boosted’ it even more.

check out the new reveal trailer below:

It’s been revealed that Black Ops 3 is set 50 years in the future where soldiers use bio-augmentation and external “cyber rigs” to enhance motion capabilities. Players are able to boost jump in any direction, perform power slides and seamlessly mantle over obstacles – all while maintaining the ability to aim and fire a weapon. – yay.  Treyarch have also included wall running along vertical surfaces that can then be linked with a boost jump and power slide.

Character customization is back for multi-player – which always gets a big tick for me and once again, female soldiers are playable – another tick.

The graphics are looking very slick and while i’m open about not being the biggest fan of the direction the series has taken, i will undoubtedly nab myself a pre-order for the PS4….speaking of which, those who pre-order will gain access to a yet-to-be-dated beta.

Black Ops 3 will be avaialble for PC, XBox One and PS4 users November 6th – sorry PS3 owners.

Movie Talk: M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit

Nana's not feeling too well in M. Night's The Visit
Nana’s not feeling too well in M. Night’s The Visit

M. Night Shyamalan.  The name back in 1999/2000 meant thrill and excitement for movie goers with titles such as The Sixth Sence and Unbreakable causing a stir.  2002’s Signs was an alright alien film but by the mid 2000’s, Shyamalan’s name didn’t hold the adoration it once had and a string of less than ok movies including The Village, Lady in the Water and The Last Airbender.

Things now look on the rise for Shyamalan with his TV mini series Wayward Pines (filled with an all-star cast including Matt Dillon, Terrence Howard, Juliette Lewis and Carla Gugino) looking like it could be the next Twin Peaks and now the first look at his latest up-coming release of the creepy “The Visit”.

Whoever said grandparents are sweet never had to deal with these two….

The Visit is set to premiere Sept 11th in America.

Trailer Watch: New Fantastic Four and Jurassic World Trailers Dropped

Kate Mara as The Invisible Woman
Kate Mara as The Invisible Woman

Amid all the hype surrounding the impending release of the new Avengers movie and the sneak peek look at Batman Vs Superman trailer, some of you may have forgotten that there’s a Fantastic Four movie on the way.  So as to keep you in the loop, 20th Century Fox dropped a new trailer for the superhero movie and it gives us our first glimpse at the movies prime villain Dr.Doom.

Just like the 2005 Fantastic Four movie with Jessica Alba and Chris Pratt, Dr. Doom is the main protagonist here, but this time round, judging by the trailer, this movie could be a bit more memorable than it’s original.

Also newly released is trailer number two for Jurassic World.

This trailer is one dinosaur action packed 2 minutes and once again shows Chris Pratt doing his best Crocodile Dundee impersonation but replacing the buffalo with hungry dinosaurs.

Fantastic Four releases in Australia on August 6th

Jurassic World releases in Australia on June 11th
